In 2001, OGCDC developed special education model for children with intellectual disability in Hue City. The success of this model was marked by the cooperation of DED via the support special education expert as advisor about expertise and trainers for our office. In order to upgrade specialized knowledge as well as skills of caring and educating young retardates.
The German special education expert – Ms. Susanne Arbeiter has devoted and built basic background for the special education, integration and early intervention for children with intellectual disabilities program. After five years of working at OGCDC, Mrs. Heller goes on sharing specialized content and knowledge which is up-to-date and suitable to the development of the students as well as the education. Three years passing left 5 handbooks syllabi for all students at primary schools and special ones. Those syllabi mainly focus on such aspects as Enabling and Supporting Learning, Free Work, Literacy, Mathematics, Enabling and Supporting Communication. In order to reinforce the cooperation of carrying out the project and give favourable chance for experts to effectively apply new methodology, DED has sponsored workshops, buying teaching aids and also material facilities in the hope of expanding this model at places where there is a need to education for young mental retardates.
The special education program, so far, has been conducted in TT Hue with 6 classes at Future school, two at Duc Son pagoda and five at Nam Dong District. With an aim to ensure the quality of teaching and timely sponsor to teachers at Nam Dong District, DED provides the local expert to has contributed to supply human resources to OGCDC’s special education team.
Actually, the propose – “Setting up and carrying out special class/school program for young children with intellectual disabilities” is still new and fledgling in Vietnam, especially in Hue. Therefore, DED expert’s expertise supports are very important and necessary because the local experts still haven’t had experience in this field. In fact, the support of DED plays a crucial role in encouraging OGCDC to attain objectives of multiplying and building more and more schools/classes so as to satisfy the fundamental need that is creating suitable classroom environment for young children with intellectual disabilities.
